June Meeting at The Woman’s Club of Topeka

June Meeting at The Woman’s Club of Topeka

Our June meeting was one of the best.  Through the 2019-2020 year, Woman’s Club had just two in-person meetings following four meetings held over Zoom due to COVID restrictions and lockdowns.  However, the June Meeting was a wonderful gathering and success.

New Officers Installed

The last meeting of the year was on June 3rd.  Officers were installed by Phyllis K in a very clever flower ceremony.  The beautiful truck door prize was made and donated by Vicki H.   Its patriotic design is just beautiful and so well put together.

Program

Our program was about the Master Gardens around Topeka.  We learned about the gardens at the Governor’s Mansion, native plants at the Kansas History Museum, xeriscape and vegetables at the Expocentre, and Woodland Gardens at Lake Shawnee.

Nature Trail at the Kansas History Museum

Along the East Trail, you can walk through the Tallgrass Prairie.  This native grass looks like very tall wheat and is just beautiful to watch sway in the breeze.

The North Trail includes a bridge over a creek bank, rich with red cedars, redbuds, black walnuts, and elms.  This is such a beautiful sight to see.

The West Trail shows relationships between people and environment.  This trail features a rope bridge leading to bluebird houses and an open classroom area.  It shows the erosion from the creek bed which threatened to destroy the parking lot at the museum and the utility pipes.

The South Trail is a beautiful walk through the prairie which leads up to an old schoolhouse.  This is the Stach school house which was built in 1877, east of Delia in Jackson County.  This is what it was like for children back then to walk to school each day.

Governor’s Mansion

There is a wonderful trail that the public is welcome to walk around the Governor’s Mansion.  This trail features an abundance of landscaping.  The trail is a 4.8 mile trail with beatuiful overlooks and you can even bring you dog on a leash!

Lake Shawnee

The Woodland Demonstration Garden at Lake Shawnee is just stunning.  You can watch a video tour of it by clicking play on the video player below:

Thank You!

We had a wonderful time at the June Meeting so we’d like to think all of those that made the meeting possible.  In addition, the door prize was gorgeous!

There are plans to host many activities continue throughout the summer, as an example, the Fall Coffee is the kick-off for the new club year.
